Magdalenenklause - Nymphenburger Park
Behind the greenhouses at the Nymphenburg park could be built Elector Max Emanuel at an advanced age by his court architect Joseph Effner 1725/26 the Magdalenenklause. Princely Max Emanuel wanted to devote himself to meditation and prayer, but did not live to complete. The Hermitage, like a ruin architecture with Romanesque, Gothic and Moorish forms was then in vogue. This single storey, rectangular building enclosing the chapel except four living cell-like rooms, which are paneled in oak. The chapel is decorated with artificial coral and shells in a cave. Crucifix and candlesticks are carved from narwhal tusk. The dome of the chapel is covered with a mosaic and the ceiling paintings of Nikolaus Gottfried Stuber of the penitent Mary Magdalene are dedicated.
