Prinzregententheater

At the request of King Ludwig II, the Prince Regent Theatre in 1900/01 by the architect Max Littmann as the Festival Hall was built for Richard Wagner. Already in 1901 was the opera house with the "Meistersinger" will be opened, which led to the founding of the Munich Opera Festival. As theater, it opened in 1902 with Schiller's "Wallenstein's Camp" and "Piccolomini". The neo-classical facade with slightly convex curved fronts, 3jochiger porch and driveway ramps on both sides right and left of the pediment crowned by four characters, the music, song, tragedy and comedy. The heart of the theater is designed as a amphitheater with 1000 seats. It provides excellent visibility and has been designed according to Bayreuther model. On the rear wall there are 9 boxes, which is seen in the middle of the former royal box with the Bavarian coat of arms above, which is supported by two lions. The side walls are divided by tall monument to Richard Wagner columns. In the semi-circular niches in between are gilded stucco vases. The flat ceiling is painted by Ludwig Moessel Groteskornamentik. In 1964 the theater had to be closed due to disrepair. After extensive and costly restoration work, it could be reopened in 1999 with Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde." A marble statue of the composer Richard Wagner is located in the small park next to the theater. It was created by Wadere and inaugurated in 1913.
